  A console table is typically a shallow table affixed to or placed up against a wall. Occasionally, a console table is used behind a sofa, but then it's called a sofa table. They come in different shapes, sizes and materials and can be used in any room. 

An occasional table has several aliases. Sometimes they are referred to as accent tables or side tables. The terms end tables and drink tables are also quite common. A lamp table or a night table can fall into the occasional table category. It doesn't have a specific function. Sometimes one can even have a drawer or two
